Severe weather can happen in any season and place, make sure you take time to help keep your family and home safe. Remember, to stay safe and calm. Items and homes can be replaced, but lives can’t. We encourage everyone to be safe, stay informed and prepare as you can.
***Before a Storm***
✅ STAY INFORMED
Monitor weather conditions from reliable sources and stay connected with local authorities. Have a way to receive emergency alerts, and keep phones charged. Solar powered battery banks are a great option.
✅ HAVE A PLAN
Know where to go in case of severe weather, and practice your plan with your family and friends. Make sure to be ready to go in case of an evacuation and make sure to leave as soon as possible. DO NOT attempt to evacuate after your local emergency agencies have deemed it unsafe to evacuate. This includes making sure to fill up your vehicle(s) so you can easily travel lengthy distances if necessary. Evacuating at the earliest can mean avoiding clogged highways and missing out on places to stay.
✅ KEEP AN EMERGENCY KIT
Prepare a kit with essentials like water, food, medications, batteries, cash and first aid supplies. Don’t forget flashlights, candles, matches, additional clothing and footwear. Make sure your kit can cover at least a week or more. Include food that can be prepared without electricity. If you plan on having a generator, make sure you think about how to keep it running such as accessing fuel and having the means to purchase if cards are not able to be accepted. Be sure to regularly check your emergency kit and rotate/refresh items as needed.
✅ TAKE SHELTER
Seek shelter during storms; avoid windows and stay away from electrical appliances. Go to the center room of a home, this can be a bathroom or closet that does not have any exterior windows. If outside, seek cover immediately and shelter in a safe structure. Don’t forget to take or have access to your emergency kit.
✅ PREP YOUR HOME
Trim trees, secure and/or store outdoor items and furniture, and reinforce windows and exterior doors. Charge your phones and power banks. Fill your tubs with water as needed. Make sure you know your insurance policy coverage for your home and property including rental insurance if you don’t own your home. Have emergency numbers available incase you need to file a claim or report anything after the severe weather has passed.
✅ STAY CONNECTED
Check in with friends and family outside of your area to let them know you of your situation both before and after severe weather. Don’t forget to check on your neighbors, friends and family in the area as well. Encourage one another and if possible, help others to prepare/weather out the storm.
✅ BE MINDFUL
Severe weather can be extremely dangerous and stressful. Remember that others need to prepare to which may mean businesses closing early and/or less of certain items being available so plan accordingly and prepare ahead of time when possible. Use caution and be very careful if you plan to travel or go outdoors during a severe weather encounter. Don’t forget check in with your family and children before/during the event and afterwards as it can be a traumatic experience for all.
